Freetrapper tells the story of Beaver trappers who were the cowboys of early America. Renegade mountaineers of the Jacksonian era who cut trails through the wild in search of beaver pelts – prized by hatters, doctors, and perfumers. A bitter-tart note of bergamot draws attention to the hunters and is soon replaced by dark cedar and snakeroot. Clear and modern, the result is an interesting, balanced combination of crackling-dry woods and needle-like undertones based on beguiling, synthetic beaver castor.

Top notes:Distilled frankincense, bergamot, bitter orange
Heart notes:
Dark cedar, nutmeg, snake root, osmanthus
Basic notes:
Amberwood, Santal, Castoreum

Behind the Fragrance

“Freetrapper is our most modern masculine scent, but its origins are early America. Many of the highways we drive down today were originally trails used for overland passage via stagecoach and horses. Before that, trails were cut the old fashioned way with machetes. Those usually followed natural paths pounded out by large game animals in search of food. American trails going west were cut for a few important reasons. Lewis & Clark led the first expedition to survey the land acquired in the Louisiana Purchase. The government wanted to find a way across the huge expanse of the western territories, hopefully by water. They hoped to establish American presence in a native country, and to set up trade routes for a much needed commodity: beavers. Beavers were happening rodents in the 18th & 19th centuries. They had been depleted in Europe where their fur and testicles were used for hats, cosmetics, and tanning. America was full of beavers. Much has been written about castoreum (oil extracted from the beaver's testicle-like castor sac). Obviously it is a polarizing product. We do not use the real oil anymore, although some companies do. The real oil smells like a zoo. It is fecal, repulsive-attractive, dark and leathery. Beavers use it combined with their urine to mark their territory. It is an important animalic note in perfume that offers much sex appeal. Freetrapper has a delicate leathery base helped with synthetic castoreum. It starts with fresh citrus – bitter orange and bergamot, falls back upon clean blond woods and the spice of cistus labdaunum, until it finally concludes with warm amber and sandalwood.” – David Seth Moltz

D.S. & Durga

D.S. & Durga is a Brooklyn-based brand whose fragrances tell stories that transport you to faraway places. Each fragrance is a fragment of half-remembered myths of pioneers, frontierswomen and cowboys, imaginary landscapes, saloons and workbenches that invite discovery. According to the founders, the art of a perfume lies not only in the quality but also in the handling of the individual components. D.S. stands for David Seth Moltz, who taught himself how to make perfume. He lives his passion for transforming musical and literary spaces into fragrances. This also means that every single fragrance is conceived and constructed in-house by D.S. & Durga themselves, i.e. without intermediaries or interpretation by external perfumers. Kavi (aka Durga) designs everything around the fragrances. By thinking in terms of angles, light, shadow and texture, she creates clarity in form and function. Through this constellation, everything the couple loves about music, art, nature and design is told in detail aromatically. All the fragrances are invisible soundtracks that you can wear on your body throughout the day. The more you know about the stories and events, the deeper you dive into the world inside the bottle. The story, unexpected and novel combinations are the core of the aromatic vision.
