For thousands of years, camels have transported salt and gold along the Azalai - an ancient caravan route through the Ténéré region in the Sahara Desert. Along the route stood a single acacia tree simply called the "Tree of the Ténéré" - the only living thing in an ocean of sand and often referred to as the most isolated tree in the world - 150 km from any other. This tree is the last surviving plant from a time when the desert was less parched than it is today, thanks to its deep roots that reach more than 30 meters into the earth. A sacred testament to the resilience of life that guided caravans for centuries before it was sadly killed by a drunk truck driver in 1973. Azalai is a tribute to this tragedy and all that this magical tree stood for. The fragrance, as a sensual reinterpretation of luxury, begins with an olfactory impression of gold, with the radiant warmth of saffron and blood orange and the glossy, luxurious musk Velvione - a material that has been described as like pressing your nose to the scalp of a newborn baby. Acacia gum, a syrup made from acacia sap, provides sugary sweetness balanced by salty amber and incense. Hints of mint tea and dried fruit pay homage to the Tuareg caravan riders, themselves specialists in desert survival, who held the tree and its amazing resilience in high esteem and considered it blasphemy to break its branches for firewood or let camels eat from the leaves.
