The scent of freshly baked bread is in the air – but not quite as you know it. Not a replica, but a fragrant memory. Pain Nouveau by Son Venïn captures the feeling fresh bread evokes: familiar, earthy, profound. Bread is more than food. It’s culture, connection, history.
The fragrance opens with green fig leaves, offering a milky, almost creamy fruitiness. Black pepper cuts through, adding contrast. At its heart are the true stars: grains and bread. The warm aroma of fresh dough blends with floral notes like mimosa and orange blossom. The result is a bready, gently sweet composition with a comforting oven-warmth.
The base brings calm and comfort. Creamy sandalwood merges with warm ambroxan, while bourbon vanilla rounds everything off—soft, subtly sweet, never sugary.
When people think of gourmand fragrances, they usually picture very sweet perfumes that evoke desserts. Classic examples? The scents from Jousset. Each one is inspired by a dessert or sweet dish: banana split, espresso affogato, pistachio ice cream, crème brûlée. The notes: vanilla, tonka bean, amber, coffee, chocolate, caramel, milk, cream, pudding, banana, pear—everything sweet and comforting.
But here’s the twist: Son Venïn reimagines gourmand. Pain Nouveau isn’t a dessert fragrance. It’s a scent that explores food itself — specifically, bread. Freshly baked, warm, and honest.
Since we’re launching Pain Nouveau exclusively at Woodberg, we’ve had the chance to test it extensively. And yes — it really does smell like bread. But not in a flat or gimmicky way. At first, you get a brief hit of green fig and black pepper. Then, almost immediately: a hint of brioche. Doughy, slightly sweet. Or is that the orange blossom?
What follows is a green, slightly dusty grain note that brings to mind flour and crust. Very much "bready." (And yes — we think that word is absolutely valid here.) In the heart, the initial sweetness fades a little.
Then the base starts to show: sandalwood, ambroxan, and bourbon vanilla. Warm, soft, with a subtle sweetness. Typical gourmand? Maybe, in the dry-down. But at its core, this fragrance is all about the bread. Fresh. Honest. And surprisingly modern.
We believe perfumer Caroline Mallejac has created a true niche scent with this composition. Something different — not your typical gourmand. Definitely distinctive, yet still accessible enough to appeal to many.
