The story of Shoemack and Abel: Perfumes at the highest level
Behind Abel stands, first and foremost, one person: Frances Shoemack. The New Zealander and former winemaker set out in search of the perfect natural perfume – and was bitterly disappointed. Many brands only disclosed part of their ingredients, as the exact composition was guarded as a brand secret. But Shoemack wanted to rethink perfume and enable full transparency.
To bring this vision to life, Shoemack brought two pioneers of their field on board: the first was master perfumer Isaac Sinclair. He was known in the scene for his balanced creations – always innovative and modern, yet still wearable and approachable.
The second coup was Dr. Fanny Grau. The French scientist earned her PhD in biochemistry and introduced a new perspective to the world of niche perfumery: she fermented plant sugars with natural substances such as yeast to create long-lasting and projecting scent molecules – similar to winemaking. This became the foundation for luxurious fragrances that achieve olfactory radiance even without synthetics. In 2013, the time had come: Abel launched its first perfumes.
Fragrances by Abel: Pure perfumes and the magic of skin chemistry
Abel fragrances are like distilled nature. All perfumes are composed of 100% natural ingredients. With this, Shoemack and her team extract the best from the plant world and bottle concentrated scent experiences. The main character of Abel fragrances, however, remains skin chemistry: only when a spray meets your skin do Abel perfumes unfold their full power. The molecules breathe and evolve throughout the day instead of leaving behind a static scent cloud.
The scent profiles of Abel are modern, but never difficult. The aquatic standout Cyan Nori opens fruity and light with white peach blossom, then shifts into an earthy salinity with plant-based musk and nori. Laundry Day delivers exactly what the name promises: a fresh fragrance reminiscent of cut grass, taking a fruity turn before settling into soft woody vetiver. The aldehydes in Laundry Day are the result of Abel’s biotechnology – clearly demonstrating what the brand stands for.
