Wienerblut
Here, you’re not wearing a trend – you’re wearing an era. Wienerblut treats fragrance as a cultural artifact. Inspired by the atmosphere of Vienna around 1900, the brand creates compositions that whisper their secrets rather than shout them. Small batches, natural raw materials and historical narratives – encased in distinctive flacons – make Wienerblut a true insider’s secret.
Wienerblut Perfume: The legacy of old Vienna – bottled
Behind Wienerblut is founder Alexander Lauber. In 2008, he began researching historical perfume formulas, exploring archives and immersing himself in the fragrance culture of old Vienna. His inspiration: the cultural golden age of the Austro-Hungarian Empire – and the question of how that era might smell today.
The brand name came quickly. “Wienerblut” traces back to the Vienna World’s Fair of 1873 and was popularized by Johann Strauss’s waltz of the same name. It captures the unique character and spirit of the Austrian capital. This very mood – somewhere between melancholy, elegance and hedonism – is what Wienerblut translates into scent. The international debut came with the fragrance Klubwasser at the legendary Parisian concept store Colette – a true accolade for any niche brand.
Depth over loud luxury – Wienerblut fragrances
Wienerblut’s creations don’t follow conventional mainstream structures. Instead, Alexander Lauber focuses on complex, unisex compositions with a high proportion of natural ingredients that unfold slowly on the skin. The idea: perfume as a personal experience, not a projection. Or in other words – understatement over beast mode.
The flacons continue this narrative. Some are crafted by hand using traditional glassmaking techniques and feature precious materials like Bakelite for the caps – a material historically tied to the era of the monarchy. Small irregularities in edges and details are intentional, serving as a statement of true craftsmanship with character.
But enough history – here are the fragrances that tell it:
- Freudian Wood – Even its namesake would have taken true pleasure in this – ambrette seed, cypress, milk and caraway create an intimate, subtly animalic skin scent.
- Ballroom Bohème – A day in 1877, dancing is forbidden – and yet you take the floor: clove, mangrove wood, orris butter, tonka and black vanilla transport you into a night of quiet rebellion.
- Volkamaria – An old formula with a mysterious name led to the rediscovery of the long-forgotten “Volkameria Fragrans,” a plant that once lent its name to compositions by major perfume houses. Calabrian bergamot, green mandarin, Moroccan rose and iris bring it back to life in this fragrance.
