In a nutshell:

Men's skin has specific needs: it is thicker, oilier, and more stressed by shaving – which is why products tailored to men's skin (e.g. lightweight textures, soothing aftershaves) are essential.

Your individual skin type matters: normal, dry, oily, combination, or sensitive skin all require different care – especially when it comes to cleanser, toner, serum, and moisturizer.

Skincare routine in 5 steps: 1) cleansing, 2) post-shave care/toner, 3) serum, 4) moisturizing (cream or oil), 5) daily sun protection with SPF 30+ – optional: exfoliator, mask, anti-aging.

Mature skin needs extra care: from the age of 30–40, signs of aging become visible. Products with retinol, peptides, or vitamin C support regeneration, firmness, and protection against UV damage.

Product recommendations by skin type: There are tailored sets and ingredients for every skin type – e.g. hyaluronic acid and antioxidants for normal skin, salicylic acid for oily skin, soothing extracts for sensitive skin.

1. The Differences Compared to Women’s Skincare

Skin characteristics: Men’s skin is generally thicker and oilier than women’s. That’s why men often need specialized products tailored to their needs, such as a cleanser or day cream with a lighter texture.

Shaving care: Facial shaving can quickly stress the skin and cause irritation. That’s why it’s helpful to use specific products both before and after shaving – such as an aftershave – to soothe and additionally care for the skin.

2. Identifying Your Skin Type

To know how to truly care for your skin, it’s important to identify your skin type. Your skin type determines which products might benefit your skin – and which won’t because every type has its own specific needs.

Normal skin

This skin type feels neither oily nor dry and usually has a smooth, even texture. Pores tend to be small, and the skin appears balanced. It’s more prone to dryness than to breakouts. If you have this skin type, consider yourself lucky – it doesn’t require much. Still, a few essentials like sunscreen shouldn’t be skipped to keep your skin in top shape.

Dry skin

Dry skin can look rough, cracked, flaky, and red. It often feels tight and itchy, and is prone to irritation. Environmental factors like heat, wind, or air conditioning, as well as stress, diet, and hormones, all play a role. This skin type has a weakened barrier, making it more vulnerable to harmful external influences – which can accelerate signs of aging.

Oily skin

Oily skin tends to leave a shiny film on the surface and is often marked by enlarged or irritated pores due to excess sebum production. Sebaceous glands produce this oil to protect the skin, but when overproduced, it can clog pores. The upside? Oily skin is usually well-hydrated and often shows signs of aging later. However, blemishes, acne, and pimples are common. Since testosterone stimulates oil production, many men are prone to oily skin.

Combination skin

Combination skin is mostly oily but has dry patches – usually outside the "T-zone" (forehead, nose, and chin). The cheeks are often dry, while the T-zone is shiny and prone to breakouts. Again, stress and environmental factors can play a role.

Very sensitive/reactive skin

This skin can be oily, normal, or dry – but it’s usually on the dry side. It reacts quickly, is easily irritated, and prone to redness – especially if too many or the wrong products are used in your routine.

Mature skin

Mature skin isn’t technically a skin type on its own, but rather an additional condition that develops over time.

Over time, the skin loses elasticity, often making the complexion appear dull and tired. This impression is reinforced by the fact that aging skin tends to become drier and more sensitive, meaning it needs deeper nourishment and targeted regeneration.

Even though men’s skin is generally thicker and therefore a bit more resilient than women’s, it still develops lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation spots over the years. Wrinkles tend to show up early around the eyes and mouth, where the skin is thinner and often drier than on the rest of the face.

In addition to genetics, external factors also play a major role in skin aging. Most notably, UV exposure – it's the leading cause of premature wrinkles. Lifestyle and diet are equally important: for instance, smokers tend to age more visibly than non-smokers.

Many men start noticing the typical signs of aging in their 40s and 50s, although the first indicators often appear as early as their 30s. So it makes sense for men to start thinking about skincare a bit earlier if they want to slow down the aging process. Skincare routines also evolve after 50 and again after 60, as new needs often emerge – such as increased dryness or sensitivity.

Key ingredients for your skin type

Normal: Hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, aloe vera
Dry: Shea butter, jojoba oil, panthenol
Oily: Salicylic acid, tea tree oil, witch hazel
Combination: Niacinamide, zinc oxide, green tea extract
Sensitive: Chamomile, oat extract, calendula
Mature skin: Collagen, peptides, antioxidants

3. The Perfect Skincare Routine – Step by Step

3.1 Preparing the Skin: Cleansing

A thorough cleansing routine, morning and evening, removes dirt, excess oil, and dead skin cells that can clog pores. It also preps the skin for your skincare routine and any upcoming shave.

Normal skin

For men with normal skin, a gentle facial cleanser is ideal – one that cleans thoroughly without stripping the skin. A formula with balanced ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin helps maintain the skin’s natural moisture balance and perfectly preps it for shaving and further care.

Dry skin

Men with dry skin should use a mild cleanser that doesn’t dry out or irritate the skin further. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, squalane, or aloe vera are ideal to calm and hydrate. It’s important to avoid harsh chemicals and fragrances, which can aggravate the skin. A pH-neutral cleanser is also a good option to preserve the skin’s acid mantle and protect its barrier.

Oily skin

Men with oily skin should go for a cleanser that effectively removes excess oil and dirt without over-drying. Clarifying ingredients like salicylic acid, tamanu oil, or clay help purify pores and prevent breakouts.

Combination skin

Men with combination skin need a cleanser that mattifies oily areas and hydrates dry zones. Balancing ingredients like blue tansy, niacinamide, or zinc oxide help clear the skin and reduce blemishes. The cleanser should be gentle enough not to dry out or irritate. A pH-balanced formula helps maintain the skin’s natural equilibrium and preps it well for follow-up care. Regular cleansing is essential to keep the skin fresh and healthy by removing oil and grime.

(Very) sensitive skin

For men with sensitive skin, a particularly gentle cleanser is essential – one that soothes and avoids irritation. Calming ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, or oat extract help reduce redness and sensitivity. Another option is to use surfactant-free cleansers. These often don’t foam and remove dirt, oil, and residue through alternative means. They're usually based on cream, oil, gel, or gel-to-oil formulations.

Mature skin

If aging skin is already a concern during cleansing, opt for a facial cleanser that nourishes while targeting signs of aging. Anti-aging ingredients like vitamin C or retinol can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and give the skin a more radiant appearance.

3.2 Shaving Care / Toner

Properly preparing the skin before shaving and using high-quality shaving products is key to preventing irritation and redness. A toner before shaving is recommended, as it cleanses and tones the skin, making it more receptive and smoother for the shave. After shaving, it’s important to soothe and hydrate the skin. A calming aftershave lotion or moisturizing gel can reduce irritation, nourish the skin, and support the healing process.

Normal skin:
Toner with soothing and balancing ingredients like rose water or witch hazel.

Oily skin:
Toner with astringent ingredients like salicylic acid to refine pores and control excess oil.

Dry skin:
Toner with hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or panthenol to moisturize and calm the skin.

Sensitive skin:
Alcohol-free toners with calming ingredients like chamomile or aloe vera to reduce irritation.

Combination skin:
Toners that mattify oily areas and hydrate dry zones – for example, with zinc or niacinamide.

Mature skin:
Toners with anti-aging ingredients like peptides or antioxidants to firm and revitalize the skin.

3.3 Targeted Care: The Serum

A facial serum is a concentrated formulation specifically designed to target particular skin concerns and provide intensive care.

Serums typically contain high concentrations of active ingredients like vitamins, antioxidants, peptides, or hyaluronic acid. These penetrate deeply into the skin and work from within.

They have a light texture – often water-based – which allows them to absorb quickly and deeply. Serums are applied after cleansing and before using a moisturizer.

They can help hydrate the skin, reduce wrinkles, fade pigmentation spots, improve texture, or combat blemishes. In short, a facial serum supports overall skin health and promotes a radiant, youthful look.

Top ingredients by skin type & our recommendations:

Normal skin: Hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, antioxidants – for hydration and protection
Oily skin: Salicylic acid, niacinamide, tea tree oil – to regulate oil and clear pores
Dry skin: Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, shea butter – for deep hydration and nourishment
Combination skin: Niacinamide, zinc oxide, green tea extract – to balance and care for varied skin areas
Sensitive skin: Chamomile, oat extract, allantoin – to soothe and reduce irritation
Mature skin: Retinol/Bakuchiol (natural retinol alternative), peptides, collagen – to regenerate and firm the skin

3.4 Moisturizing Care

Oils are especially suitable for dry or mature skin, as they provide intensive nourishment and lock in moisture. They tend to be richer and are usually free of added preservatives or fragrances. Oils can be used on their own or layered with a moisturizer for extra care and they often double as beard care, too.

Creams are lighter and work well for normal to oily skin types. They deliver hydration without clogging pores. In addition to moisturizing agents, creams often contain active ingredients like antioxidants or hyaluronic acid to address specific skin concerns. It's important to tailor your moisturizer to your skin type and needs for best results.

For mature or very dry skin, a night cream is recommended. These deliver long-lasting and deeper hydration and often include key anti-aging ingredients. They tend to be richer in texture and take longer to absorb.

Normal skin:
Light moisturizers with vitamins and antioxidants to protect and care for the skin.

Dry skin:
Rich creams or facial oils with hydrating ingredients like shea butter or jojoba oil to deeply nourish and moisturize.

Oily skin:
Oil-free moisturizers or gels with mattifying ingredients like salicylic acid to control excess oil. Non-comedogenic facial oils can also help – these are lightweight and won’t clog pores. Oily skin can also be dehydrated, which may trigger overproduction of sebum. By giving the skin the oil it actually needs, you can help balance sebum levels.

Combination skin:
Lightweight moisturizers that mattify oily areas and hydrate dry ones – for example, with hyaluronic acid or niacinamide. Non-comedogenic oils can also be beneficial; these lighter oils won’t block pores. Sometimes the skin produces excess oil in response to dryness, which leads to oily patches. In such cases, a facial oil can help rebalance the skin’s oil production.

Sensitive skin:
Creams with soothing ingredients like chamomile or oat extract to calm the skin and reduce irritation.

Mature skin:
Anti-aging creams with collagen, retinol, or peptides to firm the skin and combat signs of aging.

3.5 Sun protection

UV rays can cause premature skin aging and increase the risk of skin cancer. That’s why using a daily sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is essential to protect your skin from harmful UV exposure.

One of the key differences in sunscreens lies in the type of filter they use mineral or chemical. Mineral (or physical) sunscreens use filters like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to reflect UV rays. They're often better suited for sensitive skin, as they're less likely to cause irritation. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert them into heat. They’re easier to rub in and usually don’t leave a white cast.

Mineral sunscreens are ideal for very sensitive skin or children, while chemical options often offer higher water resistance and are better suited for active lifestyles.

4. Additional Steps for Your Skincare Routine

It’s generally recommended to exfoliate the face once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells and cleanse the skin. However, the exfoliant should not be too harsh or irritating. If you have sensitive skin or existing skin irritation, exfoliating less frequently or opting for a gentle formula is advised.

It’s important to adjust the frequency to your skin type and listen to what your skin needs. If your skin feels irritated or dry after exfoliating, reduce how often you use it or switch to a milder option. Following up with a hydrating mask or moisturizer is also a good idea to calm and rehydrate the skin.

Normal skin:
Hydrating masks and exfoliants with soothing ingredients like aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin E.

Dry skin:
Dry skin needs extra moisture, so nourishing ingredients like shea butter, avocado oil, and glycerin are ideal in masks and peels.

Oily skin:
Masks and exfoliants that help regulate sebum and refine pores are best here. Look for ingredients like clay, salicylic acid, and tea tree oil.

Combination skin:
Balanced care is key. Go for masks and peels with mattifying ingredients like zinc oxide, witch hazel, and green tea extract.

Sensitive skin:
Since sensitive skin reacts easily, stick to masks with gentle and calming ingredients like chamomile, oat extract, and panthenol.

5. Anti-Aging Skincare

As we age, the skin loses elasticity, firmness, and moisture. Anti-aging products with active ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, or retinol can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve overall skin texture.

For an anti-aging eye serum or cream, try the Moon Dew cream from Herbivore Botanicals or the Bright Eyes Serum by Alex Carro.

For a spa-like moment at home, consider trying anti-aging face masks. The Skin Renewal Mask from Grown Alchemist and the Radiant Glow 2-in-1 Mask Scrub from Evolve Beauty are both excellent choices.

6. Parfum – the perfect last step
