Introduction
Which perfume suits me? The search for the perfect perfume is like a personal trip that should take your personality - and therefore your individual preferences and needs - into account. But how do you find the one perfume that really suits you? And what should you pay attention to if you don't yet feel at home in the perfume game? In this perfume guide, or advice book, we will explore the basics of perfume selection with you and help you to start this so-called "fragrance journey" in order to make it a successful trip.
Basics of perfume selection
Before you enter this niche perfume world, you should understand the basics. From the notes of the fragrance pyramid – top, middle and base notes – to the different fragrance families , it is important to have an overview. You should also understand the difference between Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum in order to make the right choice (here you can find all the relevant information on the differences).
Fragrance pyramid: The division into top, heart & base notes
These three components together form a fragrance pyramid that describes the development of the fragrance over time.
Top notes
The top notes are the first scents you notice , when you apply the perfume. They are usually light and fleeting and provide the first impression of the fragrance. Top notes are often fresh and invigorating and can include citrus, fruity or spicy notes. However, these notes disappear relatively quickly after applying the perfume, usually within 15-30 minutes.
Heart notes
After the top notes have faded, the heart notes come to the fore. Heart notes are generally a little heavier than top notes and determine the character of the fragrance . They are the "heart" of the perfume and last longer than the top notes, usually for several hours. Heart notes can be mainly floral, fruity, spicy or woody and give the fragrance depth and complexity.
Basic notes
The base notes are the deepest and most long-lasting notes in the perfume. They only appear when the top and heart notes have faded and remain on the skin for hours or even the whole day. Base notes are often heavier and more sensual and give the perfume its stability and depth . They can contain notes such as musk, amber, vanilla, patchouli or woody notes and form the foundation of the fragrance.
Recognize your own fragrance preferences
Does the perfume suit my lifestyle?
Your personal style, your personal preferences and your lifestyle play a crucial role when you want to find the right perfume.
It is important to recognize this and to determine your fragrance preferences based on it. Should it be something playful or clear/edgy? Should the fragrance be immediately noticeable, heavy and have a strong sillage (scent trail) or do you want to reveal something as intimate as your own scent only when someone is close to you? Should it be a subtle signature or more of a bold statement?
Recognize personal fragrance preferences
To make it easier to deal with fragrance genres, it helps to divide them into a few basic scents . The deeper you delve, however, the more granular you can become and also differentiate between combinations of different fragrance worlds, which in turn form their own genre. In our view, the most reliable way to classify them is to use the principle of exclusion. In the second step, you can then find out which of the remaining fragrance genres appeals to you the most and then divide it into the aforementioned combinations. We roughly differentiate between the following fragrances:
Floral scents
Fruity scents
Fresh scents
Spicy scents
Woody scents
Sweet, creamy scents
Aquatic scents
Molecular fragrances
Musk scents
Citrus scents
Clean fragrances
Green scents
Gourmand fragrances (perfumes with edible notes, such as vanilla, which usually smell like dessert)
Skin chemistry & perfume
Your skin chemistry can greatly affect the scent of a perfume. Before you choose a perfume, test it to make sure it works well with your skin.
How skin chemistry affects scent
Skin chemistry plays a crucial role in the scent of a perfume. It influences how the perfume develops and can take the scent in a completely different direction.
Each person has a unique chemical composition on their skin, which is influenced by factors such as pH, sebum production, amount of sweat and even diet. This individual skin chemistry interacts with the fragrance ingredients in a perfume and can cause the scent to develop in different ways.
Some fragrance notes may be more intense or last longer on one person's skin than on another's. To break it down simply, a perfume may last longer on someone with dry skin than on someone with oily skin because the fragrance molecules can bind better to dry skin. Additionally, certain fragrances may smell different than they do in the bottle due to the chemical reaction with a person's skin.
It is important to note that skin chemistry affects not only the initial scent of a perfume, but also how it evolves over time. A fragrance can change during wear on a person's skin as the different scent notes interact with the skin chemistry and evolve in a certain direction. What was perceived as fresh and citrusy at the beginning may later transform into a warmer and woodier scent.
Ultimately, the individual skin chemistry makes most perfumes unique. Some more, some less. Molecular perfumes in particular have the strong ability to interact with skin chemistry and create something unique. What smells great on one person can smell completely different on another. It is therefore advisable to test perfumes on your own skin before buying them to ensure that they harmonize with your skin and develop the desired scent character.
How to test and use perfume correctly?
Choosing the right perfume requires patience and a willingness to experiment. Try different scents to find out which ones suit you best, how they develop on your skin and best underline your personality.
Rest & Time
We recommend that you always take your time and be calm when testing perfumes. Testing perfumes in a rush, surrounded by lots of other people and smells and other influencing factors such as volume and visual stimuli, can have an influencing effect. Testing perfume samples in a familiar environment, with enough time to be able to assess the development and components of the fragrance pyramid of each fragrance, makes all the difference.
A familiar place for testing
The best place to test perfume is in a familiar place. Here you can take more time and pay attention to your wrist, for example, and smell the perfume you have sprayed there. There are also fewer other perfumes in circulation than in a perfumery, for example, which could distract you or mislead your judgment.
This way you can take the time you need and, for example, test a different perfume every day and also evaluate its durability, ask people around you and, for example, take into account the effect it has on work colleagues and others in your fine evaluation.
Decide with perfume samples instead of in the perfumery
For the reasons mentioned above, namely peace and quiet and testing in a familiar place, we also offer samples for every perfume ( you can find everything you need to know about our bottlings here ). You can order these hand-filled to your home so that you can choose exactly the right moment, the right mood and the right time to test them. If a scent doesn't blow you away straight away, you can have perfume samples filled in our store and test them in the peace and quiet of your own home to find the perfume that suits you and accentuates your personality, so that in the best case scenario it will be the scent you want to smell on yourself forever.
