Love-O-Matic: Clean can be edgy too

After a decade of gourmand dominance, a familiar fragrance family is making a comeback: clean scents. Back in the '90s, Calvin Klein’s CK One broke gender norms as the first unisex perfume. Today, thanks to their modern minimalism, clean scents are regaining popularity. Subtle, soft, and unobtrusive, they melt into the skin and highlight the individuality of the wearer

What are clean scents?

Characterized by simplicity, clean scents focus on pure accords. Common notes include musk and white florals, as seen in Byredo’s Blanche. Molecule-based perfumes featuring Iso E Super or sandalwood also fall into this category.

The best way to describe clean scents? “Clean”. They evoke a sense of freshness and often remind us of freshly washed laundry or crisp air. Light and airy, they make for perfect everyday fragrances.

“Love-O-Matic is about sparking connections – without forcing them, just staying open to love in all its forms. Even in a laundromat at 3 p.m. on a Tuesday... It captures that vibrant tension between routine and romance, solitude and connection, with a bright, playful note.”

Love-O-Matic

In a fragrance family often leaning toward the conventional, playfulness is a rare find. But clean doesn’t have to mean boring – something perfumer Jérôme Di Marino proves with his latest creation, “Love-O-Matic.” Inspired by contrasts, Di Marino prefers surprise over predictable naturalism. Together with Room 1015 founder Michael Partouche, whose artistry thrives on rebellion, they make a true dream team in perfumery. With “Wavechild,” they already reimagined aquatic scents to great acclaim.

Now they’ve turned their attention to clean scents.

Love-O-Matic is meant to transport us to a Parisian laundromat, stirring up memories of nostalgic afternoons spent watching people go about their daily lives. Inspired by fleeting moments – when strangers fall in and out of love in an instant – this scent is a tribute to accidental intimacy and the spontaneous creativity of real life.

“All the world’s a stage. And all the men and women merely players”

– Shakespeare

What does it smell like?

A bit fruitier than most in its category, Love-O-Matic opens with a refined clean accord. Skin-close and familiar, it recalls fabric softener, with a silky musk at its core. So far, so laundromat. A splash of zesty lemon brightens the opening, though it fades after a few minutes, making way for powdery notes.

Initially, the bubblegum accord and promised strawberry are still subtle. It takes about 30 minutes before the strawberry fully reveals itself. Bold and cheeky, it gives the scent a touch of electric tension – without compromising its elegance.

Though delicate, Love-O-Matic lingers longer on the skin than most clean scents we’ve tried. So if you’re looking to smell clean and dynamic all day long, this is the one for you.
