Late summer: a walk along the American West Coast, old dirt paths, a warm breeze, and sun-yellow flowers stretching their necks playfully into the way. Monkeyflower celebrates the eponymous bloom, native to the western coastal regions of North America. The imported scent of the musk flower swept through Victorian England in the 19th century – from the botanical aristocracy to London street vendors and rural households, it became inescapable. Yet at the dawn of the 20th century, the flower mysteriously lost its fragrance, leaving the scientific community puzzled with a mystery that remains unsolved to this day.

Monkeyflower revives the plant and its unmistakably light, sun-warmed, and at the same time earthy-green character. The composition recalls sun-kissed skin after a long day outdoors and the gentle weariness that only summer can bring.

Behind the Fragrance

"The Musk Monkeyflower (so renowned for its vibrant scent that it was simply referred to as The Common Musk) was imported to Europe from the American west coast, where the sun-yellow flowers, perched on fuzzy, sticky stalks, can be found in meadows or along old dirt roads. The Monkeyflower was a smash hit in Victorian England, thanks to its rich musk smell. Over nearly a century, it spread from the botanical aristocracy to London street hawkers and countryside cottage windows. But at the turn of the twentieth century, the flower suddenly lost its scent—not just in domesticated plants, but in wild specimens as well. Botanists in North America reported that the uncultivated flowers had also lost their fragrance. This puzzling mystery was the hottest topic among biology conspiracy theorists for decades, but no explanation was ever found. Eventually, the subject faded into obscurity, along with the flower’s popularity as a houseplant. By then, the flowers had spread into the wild and can sometimes still be found living a quiet life in parts of Europe and New Zealand — perhaps just biding their time before returning to the olfactory stage."

Stora Skuggan

Stora Skuggan is a niche perfume brand from Sweden, founded in 2015. The brand is run by a small group of perfumers and designers. All work is handcrafted in the Stora Skuggan perfume studio or lab in Stockholm - from the design and production of the fragrances to the creation of the designs and packaging. The perfumes of Stora Skuggan are based on stories that blur the line between myth and reality. At the heart of the brand are these stories, which are conceptualized through scent and art, creating a small and unique universe for each perfume. Fragrances are a way to communicate, tell stories, and experience them. Their unique way of combining extraordinary scents makes each fragrance a work of art - from the manufacturing process to the first use. The difference from a mass-market perfume is that Stora Skuggan uses the right materials, regardless of their cost. Savings through the use of cheap substitutes for expensive oils only make sense if millions of products are to be sold, which is not their focus. Stora Skuggan wants to continue doing what they do without thinking too much about what is happening in the perfume industry. This may seem ignorant, but the goal has always been to remain autonomous, as it is the best approach to creating unique fragrances.
