According to Freud, the uncanny is both familiar and alien to us. The fragrance is an attempt to capture this quality - dark, clean, impure, innocent, erotic, exciting and fascinating - it doesn't fit into any common category. The sweetness of ambergris and the delicate floral aromas of iris and jasmine are pushed into the background by the dominating notes of resinous castoreum, animal leather and green vetiver, but they are the necessary counterparts to give this fragrance its two faces. Familiar or rather alien?

Fragrance Notes: Red Pepper, Cardamom, Cistus, Lavender, Jasmine Sambac, Iris, Costus, Cumin, Cocoa, Ambergris, Civet, Castoreum, Birch Tar, Vetiver, Suede, Opoponax

Behind the Fragrance

WienerBlut was founded in Vienna in 2008 by Alexander Lauber. Lauber spent a lot of time in antique shops, at flea markets and in the archives of the Hofburg to track down information about perfumes from Vienna during the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and in the process acquired, among other things, old cosmetic sets owned by the Habsburg family. WienerBlut believes that great fragrances are like guarded secrets and bring the greatest joy to those who keep them. The formulas are designed to whisper, not scream. WienerBlut loves the complexity of natural raw materials and uses them extensively. The high proportion of natural raw materials means that the fragrances develop dynamically over the hours. This is intentional and a sign of quality. The scents do not "diminish"; they change and become one with the wearer. The bottles are manufactured according to old glass traditions in a complex, partly manual process and have particularly beautifully crafted surfaces and edges. Their charm lies in small irregularities that testify to real handwork. The lids are made of Bakelite, a material that was developed during the monarchy. Its ivory-like and organic surface made Bakelite a popular material at that time and a replacement for ivory and horn or tortoise shell. Since it is very expensive to produce, Bakelite is rarely found today.

Viennese Blood

Wiener Blut was founded in 2008 in Vienna by Alexander Lauber. Lauber spent a lot of time in antiquarian shops, at flea markets, and in the archives of the Hofburg to uncover information about perfume from Vienna during the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and in the process acquired, among other things, old cosmetic sets from the Habsburg family. WienerBlut believes that great fragrances are like closely guarded secrets and bring the greatest joy to those who keep them. The formulas are designed to whisper, not shout. Wienerblut loves the complexity of natural raw materials and uses them abundantly. The high proportion of natural raw materials causes the fragrances to unfold dynamically over the hours. This is intentional and a hallmark of quality. The fragrances do not become "less"; they change and become one with the wearer. The bottles are made according to old glass traditions in a complex, partly manual process, and feature particularly beautifully crafted surfaces and edges. Their charm lies in small irregularities that testify to true craftsmanship. The caps are made of Bakelite, a material that was developed during the time of the monarchy. Its ivory-like and organic surface made Bakelite a popular material at that time and a substitute for ivory and horn or tortoiseshell. Since production is very expensive, Bakelite is now rarely found.
