Witch's salve, also known as witch flying salve, was a hallucinogenic ointment used in witchcraft during the Middle Ages. It was a mixture of extremely toxic ingredients, with the exact recipe unknown, and several occult scholars have died in attempts to recreate it. The most commonly mentioned ingredients include the deadly nightshade Belladonna, Angelica Archangelica, hemlock, and human baby fat. The drug induced an ecstatic trance with a strong feeling of flying, visions of extraterrestrial beings, and a primal sexual desire. These hallucinations form the core of witch mythology, where they fly to the Sabbath at Blåkulla or Brocken to engage in unholy rites of sex with the devil and other witches. In the eyes of the medieval church, this was more than an illusion, as the drug created a connection to the devil and brought the witch's spirit into his realm. Even if her body could remain in the physical world, she was still guilty of fornication with Satan in the eyes of the church.
The strong, slightly bitter, and herbal notes of wormwood and salty licorice open this mysterious, spicy fragrance, which is then taken over by the musky, soft, and slightly woody-sweet facets of the heart notes that evoke mystery and danger. This is continued by the foggy, sensual, and earthy base note with black hemlock, lichen, and patchouli.
