A blinding light. A shrill beeping. Your vision blurred. Someone appears beside you – shaking you, shouting in panic. Their voice sounds muffled, as if your ears were stuffed with cotton. You try to speak, but no words come out. Nothing in your mind makes sense. The person vanishes, and you remain slumped against the wall – motionless, like a lifeless animal. Your head lifts heavily, your gaze drifts through the chaos: burning cars, shattered concrete, molten metal. You close your eyes – then the blast. The shockwave of an explosion slams you into the wall, forces the air from your lungs. Dirt and debris fill the air, pelting your face. You glance dazedly at your hand: fresh blood. A look down your body tells you where it’s coming from – and you slowly sink into unconsciousness. When you wake up in a hospital bed, everything is still blurry. You remember the blinding light of the OR, the clatter of surgical tools, the muffled voices of the surgeons. And that scent – that scent seared into your memory: blood, scorched flesh, metal, iodine.
