When the echo drained from the room and the silence settled in, I dropped to my knees. I tilted my head back, closed my eyes, and held still for a moment. My heart pounded against my chest, each beat reverberating through my body. I took a deep breath in, slowly let it out. As the anger faded, grief took its place. Then pain. My head fell forward. When I opened my eyes, I saw through a blur of tears that my hands were covered in blood. Between my legs stood what was left of a vase, shards scattered around me. You had brought it with you when we moved in together. It reminded me of your laughter, our evenings, the language that was only ours, the wildflowers you picked from the field. Of everything that once felt certain. And of my pleading for forgiveness. That damn vase – first it lost its color, then its shape. Now only my blood clings to it. Beside an overripe pineapple stands a bottle of gin. Sweet, heavy, on the verge of turning. One last swallow left. My head throbs. The gin burns.

Painful thoughts, broken plans – numbed by fermented pineapple and clear gin. Cooling lavender meets sharp pepper. In the depths, salty tears, dry vetiver, splintered cedarwood, carried by the muted warmth of tonka bean.
